TxDOT Annual Traffic Counts: The Annual Average Daily Traffic Counts (AADT) are collected by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and comprise the "On System" roadways defined as major highways and regionally significant arterials. The AADT counts result from a mathematical computation where the counts are made over a given period of time and the high and low counts are removed. The counts are done during the non-summer weeks; excluding Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. The AADT counts are what could be expected during a normal workday of a given week. The first document is a table comprising counts from 1990 to 2005. Be advised that some of the counts in the Excel table are actually averages of anywhere from two up to six counts. The 3 PDFs are mapped versions of the 2005, 2006, and 2007 unaveraged, i.e. "raw," counts. Warning: These are somewhat large and may take some time to display. COA Traffic Counts: The City of Austin (COA) collects vehicle volume counts on an “as needed basis.” When a particular location needs a traffic study it has the vehicle volume count included and COA adds these counts to “City of Austin Traffic Counts” spreadsheet. When doing studies at intersections to determine if stop signs or traffic signals need to be installed, COA takes these volume counts and add them to our spreadsheet. COA does studies to set the speed limit on new streets and to determine the need for school zones at various locations. These types of studies include volume counts and they are added to the spreadsheet. These are the main reasons for volume counts but any other study the COA might do that includes vehicle volume counts will have the counts posted on the spreadsheet. The method COA uses to collect the counts is the rubber tube stretched across the road that attaches to a traffic counter. These counters have circuit boards that give multiple types of counts including the volume counts used on the spreadsheet. COA continues to add counts to the spreadsheet on a daily basis and CAMPO updates the website on a regular basis to keep it as current as possible.
The Saturation Counts are collected by Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and comprise "Off System" roadways such as arterials not incuded in the AADT counts in addition to other local/secondary roads. Saturation counts are done periodically on a regional basis and the time frame varies by region. The data is usually collected in the spring while school is still in session. The counts are 24 hour weekday (Monday thru Thursday) axles divided by two. The data is then compiled and usually released for use about 1 year after data collection, usually in August or September the following year. The data for the 2005 maps was collected in the Spring of 2005 and the maps were released for use in the Fall of 2006. Notes: Files are large and will take a minute or two to load. Labels for counts are very small so use your browser's zoom/enlarge function to view. - Next updates for the TxDOT counts will be Fall 2009 for the 2008 AADT counts and Summer 2009 for the 2008 Saturation counts.
City of Austin counts are updated about every 3-4 weeks.
